Nijikken-doro Sakura Trees is a magnificent avenue of cherry trees located in Shinhidaka, Hidaka District, Hokkaido. Stretching approximately 7km, the path is lined with over 2,000 Ezo-yama-zakura (mountain cherry) trees, making it one of the most impressive cherry blossom sites in all of Japan. As spring arrives, the canopy creates a breathtaking 'cherry blossom tunnel' that is a signature sight of this region.
The history of this road is deeply rooted in the local landscape. It was originally developed as a ceremonial route for members of the Imperial Family when they visited the Imperial grazing lands (Goryo Bokujo) that once existed in this area. This historical significance has helped preserve the scenic beauty and the harmonious relationship between nature and the local heritage.
The primary attraction is the sheer scale of the 7km-long cherry blossom path. When the blossoms are in full bloom, the entire view is enveloped in soft pink, creating a tunnel effect that surrounds travelers. The area also reflects the local culture of horse breeding, offering a view of the natural Hokkaido landscape. Visitors can also experience the local atmosphere through nearby historical elements, such as the Ryunkaku building, which is occasionally open to the public.
The best time to visit is typically from early to mid-May. To experience the most spectacular views, it is highly recommended to time your visit with the peak bloom. While daytime is perfect for seeing the colors clearly, arriving before 9:00 AM is a great way to enjoy the scenery while avoiding crowds. Occasionally, special light-up events may be held during the peak season.
Visitors can enjoy the scenery through scenic drives or leisurely strolls. Walking allows you to feel the proximity of the cherry blossom tunnel, making it an ideal setting for photography and nature observation. The road is also perfect for a scenic drive through the long, straight stretch. Depending on your interest, a visit can range from a quick 30-minute drive-through to a more immersive 3-hour walk.
The surrounding area is rich with the natural beauty and culture of Hokkaido, particularly known for its horse-breeding heritage. You will find various roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) and scenic landscapes nearby. There are also hot spring (Onsen) facilities in the vicinity, which you can include in your travel itinerary for a complete relaxation experience.
May in Hokkaido can be quite chilly and windy, so we strongly recommend bringing a jacket or an extra layer for warmth. Comfortable walking shoes are also essential.
