Nihonkoku Kaen is a sprawling botanical garden located in Ikawa Town, Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, the garden is home to an incredible collection of about 2,000 cherry trees representing 200 different species. This makes it a spectacular destination for cherry blossom viewing in the spring. Beyond the cherry blossoms, the garden is meticulously maintained with rose gardens and azalea displays, allowing visitors to experience the changing beauty of nature throughout all four seasons.
The history of the cherry trees in this park began with a systematic planting project conducted between 1972 and 1974. In 1973, the garden gained significant recognition when it was selected by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper as one of the "100 Cherry Blossom Spots We Want to Leave for Our Children" in the Akita region, alongside Shiroyama Park in Odate City. In 1977, it was also featured in the "New 30 Scenic Views of Akita" project by the Akita Kaisho Shimbun, establishing its status as a vital local landmark. The garden has a deep connection with the railway; in 1995, the JR Ikawa Sakura Station opened, and a bronze statue was installed to commemorate the station's establishment, symbolizing the long-standing relationship between the park and the local transit history.
The greatest draw is the spring cherry blossom season. The sight of 200 different species in full bloom is truly breathtaking. During this peak period, the "Sakura Festival" is held, featuring evening illuminations that transform the landscape into a dreamlike, ethereal scene. In addition to the blossoms, the park features rose gardens, azalea displays, wide-open lawn areas, and various sports facilities, making it an ideal place to spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature.
Spring (the cherry blossom season) is when this garden truly shines. The evening illuminations are highly recommended, as they offer a mystical view of the cherry blossoms that differs greatly from the daytime scenery. Visitors should also consider visiting during the seasons when roses and azaleas are in bloom to enjoy a different palette of colors and floral scents.
