Guide
Nihon Canyon is an artistic natural landscape located in Fukaura Town, Nishitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. As the name suggests, it offers a dynamic view reminiscent of famous canyons found overseas. The most striking feature is the massive, white-colored rock walls and sheer cliffs. Under a clear blue sky, the white rock faces glow brilliantly, creating a vivid contrast with the surrounding lush greenery and the deep blue sky, leaving visitors in awe. This location possesses a rare and mysterious atmosphere that sets it apart from typical Japanese landscapes.
This region is located to the west of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage site and has long been blessed with a rich natural environment. The white cliffs, where geological layers are exposed, were formed through the process of natural erosion over countless years, making this a precious landscape that allows visitors to feel the history of the Earth. The surrounding area is also home to the 'Juniko' area, characterized by 33 lakes and ponds nestled within a primeval beech forest, illustrating the rich and delicate ecological balance of this region. It has been carefully preserved by the local community as a symbol of nature's wonders.

The most notable attraction is undoubtedly the "White Cliffs." The way the massive rock formations overlap and expose beautiful geological layers looks like a natural sculpture. The expression of the rock face changes every moment depending on the angle of the light. On sunny days, the white walls reflect the sunlight brilliantly, reaching a peak of contrast against the greenery. Additionally, the viewpoints overlooking the terrain below the cliffs are perfect for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the beauty of natural formations up close.
The charm of Nihon Canyon changes depending on the season and time of day. The textures of the rock faces are most pronounced during the daytime when the sun is high, or in the afternoon when light hits at an angle, creating a more three-dimensional effect. In winter, the area transforms into a mystical "world of white" as the white cliffs blend with the surrounding snow-covered landscape. During the season of fresh greenery, the contrast between the vibrant green foliage and the white rocks is exceptionally beautiful, making it a highly recommended time for outdoor lovers.
The primary way to enjoy this area is through observing its natural beauty. You can enjoy hiking or nature walks while taking in the breathtaking views. Photography is also a very popular activity here, as travelers aim to capture the changing light and textures of the cliffs. It is a perfect place to relax and listen to the sounds of nature in silence, allowing you to disconnect from daily life and feel the breath of the Earth through a peaceful stroll.
There are many nature-rich spots in the vicinity. The 'Juniko' area, a group of 33 lakes and ponds surrounded by primeval beech forests, is an excellent place for walking. Additionally, there are hot spring (onsen) facilities around Fukaura Town, allowing you to soothe your fatigue in a hot spring after your nature walk. We recommend combining a visit to Nihon Canyon with these surrounding attractions to fully experience the natural abundance of Aomori.
As this is a natural site, comfortable walking shoes are essential. We highly recommend wearing sneakers or trekking shoes, as there may be uneven terrain or unpaved paths. It is also wise to bring a lightweight jacket to handle changing weather conditions. Since this area is close to protected natural zones, please follow strict etiquette: take all your trash home with you and do not remove any plants or rocks from the site.
