The Hirosaki Church (Nippon Sei Christian Church) is a historic landmark located in Mototeracho, Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Since its founding in 1876, it has stood as a cornerstone of faith and history in the region. The current structure, completed in 1907, is celebrated as the first Protestant church in the Tohoku region. The architecture features a distinctive double-towered Gothic style, characterized by two soaring towers, high ceilings, and pointed arch windows within a two-story wooden frame. Designated as an Aomori Prefectural Cultural Property, it serves as a vital piece of local cultural heritage.
The history of the church dates back to 1876. While it began as a Presbyterian congregation, it later became part of the Methodist tradition. The site has seen several iterations; the original church building was destroyed by fire in 1904. The current building is the third structure on this site, designed by Komagoro Sakuraba and constructed by Isaburo Saito, the son of the famous Western-style architect Sakichi Horie. This building is a precious specimen showing the development of Western architectural techniques in Meiji-era Japan. The site also played a social role in local education, once housing the Kitoku Girls' School.
The most striking feature is the double-towered Gothic exterior, reminiscent of the grandeur of Notre Dame. The white-toned walls and sharp, soaring towers create a commanding presence in the local landscape. Inside, the space is filled with natural light streaming through high ceilings and arched windows. The sanctuary features orderly rows of wooden pews and a central aisle lined with a red carpet, offering a profound sense of tranquility and a glimpse into the craftsmanship of historical wooden architecture.
Please note that interior access is strictly limited to specific days and times. You may view the interior between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, provided that the duty officer is present at the Education Hall reception. If the officer is absent, the interior will be closed. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons; the architecture harmonizes perfectly with the colorful foliage of autumn and the serene, snow-covered landscapes of winter, making it a perfect subject for photography.
Visitors can learn about the introduction of Western architecture and Protestant history to Japan through direct observation of the structure. The experience allows you to appreciate the delicate details of Gothic design and the texture of historical wooden construction. As this is a place of worship, please ensure your visit remains respectful and quiet, adhering to the rules of a sacred space.
