Nezame no Toko is a renowned scenic spot located in Agematsu Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture, and is celebrated as one of the five most beautiful gorges in Japan. Designated as a national scenic spot, the landscape was shaped over millennia by the erosion of the Kiso River against granite. The resulting exposed white granite rock formations create a striking and unique visual-scape alongside the flowing river.
While the area once featured much more turbulent rapids, changes in water levels due to dam management mean that the beautiful, massive rock formations are now clearly visible above the water's surface. This geological formation, composed of coarse-grained biotite granite, allows visitors to witness the raw, overwhelming power of nature up close.
The area is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and has been celebrated by poets for centuries. Its historical significance is even reflected in the lyrics of the Nagano Prefecture anthem, "Shinano no Kuni."
Furthermore, the site is steeped in the legend of Urashima Taro. The name and atmosphere of the area are closely linked to the story of Urashima, who, after returning from the Dragon Palace, opened a mysterious box and underwent a profound transformation. It is said that a statue of Benzaiten once resided in the central Urashima-do shrine, and the site maintains a deep connection with the nearby Rinsen-ji Temple. Even the official mascot of Agematsu Town is inspired by this local legend.
The primary highlight is the breathtaking view of the clear Kiso River flowing through the massive, exposed granite rocks. The vertical cliffs and layered rock structures serve as a testament to the exquisite beauty of natural sculpting.
