Nigome-ji is the head temple of the Shingi Shingon sect, located in Waide City, Wakayama Prefecture. The vast temple grounds are home to several National Treasures, including the Great Pagoda, as well as numerous Important Cultural Properties and historic sites. The temple offers a profound sense of both religious significance and architectural beauty rooted in the Muromachi period.
The history of Nigome-ji is deep and complex, serving as a central hub for the Shingi Shingon sect. Some of the structures within the precinct have survived even the most turbulent eras, such as the fires caused by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces. For instance, the base of the Great Pagoda still bears the physical marks of bullet holes from matchlock guns, serving as a silent witness to the violent history of the region.
