Nebuta Museum WA・RASSE is a cultural and tourism exchange facility located in the waterfront area of Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. Dedicated to the preservation and transmission of the Aomori Nebuta tradition, this facility opened in 2011 to showcase the culture of the iconic "Nebuta Festival" through immersive exhibits and hands-on experiences. The name "WA・RASSE" was chosen through a public competition and combines traditional elements with a welcoming spirit. The facility features several specialized exhibition areas. In the "Nebuta Hall," you can experience the sheer scale and power of large-scale Nebuta float parts. The "Nebuta History Corner" offers a deep dive into the historical evolution of the festival. For those looking for interactive learning, the "Information Corner" features digital terminals where you can browse archives or even take the "Nebuta Test." To participate in the test, a dedicated magnetic card (300 JPY) is required, providing a fun way to test your knowledge. Additionally, the "Exchange Hall" and "Exchange Plaza" serve as community spaces for musical performances and photo contests, bringing together locals and tourists alike.
While the museum is open year-round, it is most closely associated with the peak of summer in July and August when the Aomori Nebuta Festival takes place. This is the perfect time to visit to feel the excitement of the festival or to learn more about the traditions before the parade begins. The museum is generally open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, making it an easy stop during your daytime sightseeing. In the evening, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the surrounding waterfront area.
WA・RASSE offers much more than just visual displays; it provides opportunities for active learning. In the "Exchange Learning Room," visitors can practice traditional Nebuta music (hayashi) or learn about the process of making the floats. The museum is exceptionally well-located near Aomori Station, making it highly accessible. The facility is barrier-free and accessible for wheelchair users. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your visit. Please note that cash may be required for certain purchases, such as the Nebuta Test magnetic card. English signage and exhibits are available to assist international travelers. Regarding photography, please follow staff instructions as there may be restrictions in certain exhibition areas.
