Nawagaike is a natural lake located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters in the mountains of Mt. Takashimizu, in the eastern part of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Despite having no major rivers flowing into it, the pond is constantly replenished by the abundant spring water from Mt. Takashimizu. Surrounded by ancient forests on three sides, the area is filled with natural serenity and vitality. It is a place of exceptional natural beauty, once visited by the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
The pond is steeped in a fascinating legend of a Dragon God. It is said that during the Heian period, the warrior Tawara no Tota (a figure from the Genpei era) crossed a bridge in Omi Province. Moved by his bravery, the Dragon God granted him a gift to solve a water shortage. Following this legend, it is said that after praying and digging into the mountain, water began to spring forth overnight, giving the pond its name, "Nawagaike."
Furthermore, the pond is deeply connected to local life. Every year on July 15th, a ritual is held by representatives from the Minoya and Kitano districts, who use the pond as an irrigation source. The tradition of offering food and gifts to the Nawagaike Hime Shrine is a precious ritual preserved to this day to express gratitude for nature's blessings.
The greatest attraction is the cluster of Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho) spreading across the wetlands surrounding the pond. This plant is a northern species, and this area is considered the southwestern limit of its natural habitat. In May, the sight of the white flowers blooming in mass is truly spectacular. The reflection of the fresh green trees on the calm lake surface is a masterpiece of nature. A wooden boardwalk is also provided around the pond, allowing visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while observing the flora.
The best time to visit is May, during the blooming season of the Skunk Cabbage. This is when the vitality of the plants and the fresh greenery are at their peak, making it ideal for photography and nature observation. The summer season is also beautiful, with a stunning green gradation reflected on the water. Since this is a location for enjoying natural scenery, visiting during daylight hours will provide the most beautiful views.
The main activities here are nature observation and hiking. Walking along the well-maintained wooden paths, you can experience the ecosystem of the surrounding primeval forest and see the natural monument, Skunk Cabbage, up close. A stroll through this landscape, while reflecting on ancient legends, offers a much deeper experience than a simple walk. It is highly recommended for families and landscape photographers.
There are several other spots nearby where you can feel the abundance of water and nature. For example, the "Meoto Taki" (Married Couple Falls) features two waterfalls running side-by-side, known for the mysterious phenomenon where the thickness of the falls changes with the seasons. You can also explore various other ponds and spring spots related to the region's water resources as part of a scenic route through Nanto City.
As this is a natural area, comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing are essential. Please be careful when walking on the wooden paths in the wetland areas. Since temperatures can change depending on the season, it is wise to bring layers. To protect the environment, please take all trash home with you and avoid touching or damaging the plants. While there are no specific facilities for payment on-site, please follow basic outdoor etiquette to enjoy the serene environment.
