The National Diet Library (NDL) is the sole national library of Japan, established under the National Diet Library Act to support the activities of the National Diet. It serves as a cornerstone of Japanese knowledge, collecting and preserving a massive array of domestic and international materials to provide essential services to Diet members, the government, the judiciary, and the general public.
Founded based on the provisions of the National Diet Library Act, the library operates under the profound conviction that "Truth shall make us free." Its mission is to contribute to the democratization of Japan and global peace. Through the meticulous collection and preservation of documents, the NDL has accumulated vast resources that substantiate the history of Japan's political, administrative, and judicial structures, playing a vital role in the circulation of Japanese intellect over many years.
The NDL is much more than a simple reading room; it is a sophisticated information center handling a comprehensive range of Japanese publications and digital data. Through the legal deposit system, it collects virtually every material published within Japan. Furthermore, the library focuses on digital-age preservation through projects like the WARP (Website Information Archive) and its electronic library services. Advanced systems such as "Research Navi" are available to support specialized investigations and deep information searches.
Visiting during weekday daytime hours is the standard way to experience the library. The facility is open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM (closing at 5:00 PM on Saturdays). Visiting on a weekday afternoon allows for a calm environment for research and data searching. Please note that the library is closed on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, as well as on public holidays and during the New Year holidays. We highly recommend checking the schedule in advance.
