The Nasu Kogen Observatory is a scenic lookout located in Yumoto, Nasu Town, Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture, situated at a high altitude of 1,048 meters. In June 2010, this location was officially registered as the 100th 'Lovers' Sanctuary' in Japan. On clear days, visitors can enjoy an expansive panorama that reaches the Yamizo mountain range. The site is highly popular for its lush natural landscapes during the day and its spectacular night views after dark.
Beyond its natural beauty, the observatory holds cultural significance as a 'Lovers' Sanctuary.' It is a designated location for romantic gestures such as marriage proposals, featuring commemorative monuments and stone structures. The area maintains a serene atmosphere with stone monuments that harmonize beautifully with the surrounding natural environment.
The primary draw is the unobstructed, wide-angle view made possible by the high altitude. During the day, you can observe the rolling mountain ranges including the Yamizo mountains, while at night, the twinkling lights of the surrounding area create a magical atmosphere. The stone monuments symbolizing the 'Lovers' Sanctuary' serve as popular spots for commemorative photography.
The scenery changes with the seasons. From April to November, the bright daylight highlights the vibrant colors of nature. From December to March, operating hours are shortened, so please check the schedule in advance. While the site is excellent for stargazing and night views, be mindful of the significant temperature drops at night.
The main activity here is observing the grand panoramic landscapes unique to this high-altitude location. As a place known for significant life events like marriage proposals, it offers a tranquil environment to enjoy the view. A typical visit lasts about 30 minutes to enjoy the scenery.
The surrounding Nasu Highland area is dotted with various spots to experience nature and local culture, such as the Nasu Highland Visitor Center and other nature-focused facilities. The area is easily accessible by car, making it a perfect destination for a scenic drive.
Because the observatory is at an altitude of 1,048 meters, temperatures are typically lower than in the lowlands. Please prepare clothing suitable for the altitude and season (even in summer, a light jacket is recommended). The site features a free parking lot with a capacity for 220 cars (including 30 large buses).
