Nasumaki Beach is a beautiful coastal destination located in the town of Nasumaki, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. Situated near the border with Ibaraki Prefecture, it is recognized as one of the most spacious and prominent beaches in the Hamadori area of Fukushima. The beach is characterized by its exceptionally shallow topography, which makes it a safe and pleasant spot for swimming and enjoying the ocean during the summer season.
The landscape of this coastal area holds deep local significance. Historically, the coastline was famous for the "Futatsuiwa" (Two Rocks)—striking rock formations that stood in the sea. Due to natural erosion over time, the original structures changed, but the iconic scenery has been preserved and even reconstructed using advanced carbon fiber reinforced concrete techniques to maintain the cultural landscape. Additionally, a striking vermilion torii gate stands near the shore, creating a beautiful harmony between the spiritual scenery and the natural ocean view.
One of the most iconic sights at Nasumaki Beach is the sight of the vermilion torii gate standing against the ocean backdrop, near the famous Futatsuiwa rock formations. During the peak summer season, the wide, sandy expanse and the gentle, shallow waves provide an ideal setting for family leisure and relaxation. The surrounding area is also part of the "Nasumaki Hakkei" (Eight Views of Nasumaki), a collection of celebrated scenic spots in the region.
As a seasonal beach, Nasumaki Beach is officially open for a limited period during the height of summer. The main season typically runs from mid-July to mid-August. During this time, a lifeguard station and first-aid post are fully operational to ensure visitor safety. The area is also a renowned spot for viewing the first sunrise of the year, where the view near the torii gate is particularly breathtaking and spiritual.
Visitors can enjoy various leisure activities such as relaxing on the sand or exploring the shoreline. However, please note that marine sports, barbecues, the use of open flames, and driving vehicles onto the sand are strictly prohibited. While the beach offers a wonderful atmosphere during the summer opening, there are no shower facilities or changing rooms on-site, so please come prepared with your own supplies.
The vicinity features historical landmarks such as Nasumaki no Seki Park and other areas related to the scenic Nasumaki Hakkei. There are numerous accommodation options in the surrounding area, making it a popular destination for travelers looking to stay overnight by the sea. The beach is also relatively accessible from JR Nasumaki Station on the Joban Line.
To ensure a pleasant visit, please keep the following in mind. Since there are no showers or changing rooms available at the beach, you must bring your own towels, change of clothes, and any necessary toiletries. The use of fire, barbecues, and bringing dangerous items is strictly forbidden. While there is a free municipal parking lot for about 400 cars, it can become very crowded during peak hours. Please respect the local environment and follow all posted rules to maintain the beauty of the coast.
