The Naruto City Awa Odori is a premier Awa Odori event held over three days from August 9th to August 11th in Naruto City, Tokoshima Prefecture. While many Awa Odori festivals take place throughout the prefecture during this season, the Naruto City event serves as a leading celebration, characterized by performances that harmonize beautifully with the natural landscapes and scenery of Naruto.
Awa Odori is the quintessential traditional dance of Tokushima Prefecture, and it has been passed down through generations in Naruto City. The festival is deeply rooted in the local culture, serving as a way to strengthen community bonds through the participation of various "Ren" (dance groups). The festivities expand beyond the main dates: on August 7th, the Naruto City Summer Night Fireworks Display takes place around the Fuyo River, and on August 8th, the Naruto City Selection Awa Odori is held at the Naruto City Cultural Hall, creating a multi-layered cultural experience.
Performances are spread across several venues. Two paid viewing areas are established along the main street west of Naruto Station. Additionally, performances are scheduled for the morning of the first day, August 9th, at the Senjojiki area of Naruto Park. For a truly unique experience, the "Awa Odori IN Uzu-no-michi" features a special style of performance at the Naruto Great Bridge walkway (typically held on Saturdays from March–June and September–October), allowing visitors to witness the dance alongside the iconic swirling whirlpool scenery.
The main event is strictly limited to the three days from August 9th to 11th, when Naruto City is at its most vibrant. To fully enjoy the festivities, consider the related events: the Naruto City Summer Night Fireworks Display on August 7th and the Selection Awa Odori on August 8th. While most performances take place in the evening, the morning sessions at Naruto Park offer a chance to enjoy the dance in the daylight.
Visitors can watch various "Ren" (dance groups) such as Uzushio-ren, Uzuki-ren, Taiko-ren, Naruto Fufure-ren, Naruto City-ren, Mangetsu-ren, and Narutoshio-ren. The atmosphere around the paid viewing areas is filled with local energy. The performances at the Uzu-no-michi walkway offer a breathtaking fusion of traditional dance and the natural beauty of the Naruto sea.
The main performance area centers around the large boulevard west of Naruto Station. This area includes the Daido Ginten Gai shopping street and the parking area near the nearby retail stores. During the festival, traffic restrictions are in place, turning these streets into pedestrian-only zones. The surrounding area also offers beautiful natural views, including Naruto Park and the Naruto Great Bridge.
As this is a highly crowded event, we recommend arriving early. Please carry cash, as many food stalls and local vendors may not accept credit cards. Since the area becomes a pedestrian-only zone due to traffic regulations, please allow plenty of time for travel. When filming or photographing, please be mindful of those around you to maintain festival etiquette. Regarding accessibility, we recommend checking the status of paid viewing areas and surrounding facilities in advance. For your comfort, wear light, breathable clothing suitable for the summer heat and easy movement.
