Naruko Onsen is a renowned hot spring resort located in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is historically recognized as one of the "Three Great Hot Springs of Oshu," alongside Iizaka Onsen in Fukushima and Akiu Onsen in Miyagi. The town is nestled at the foot of the Naruko volcanic group at an altitude of 150–200m, with the scenic landscape spreading toward Mt. Hanabuchi across the Arao River. The area offers a wide range of accommodations, from large-scale hotels to traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) and medicinal bath stays (toji). The most distinctive feature is the incredible variety of spring water; among the 10 types of spring water defined by Japanese law, seven types are found here, including chloride, bicarbonate, sulfate, iron-rich, acidic, sulfur, and simple thermal springs.
In ancient and medieval times, the area was known as "Tamatsukuri-no-yu." During the Edo period, it was known as "Sendai Naruko-no-yu," signifying its status as a territory of the Sendai Clan. The hot springs have long been valued for their medicinal properties, particularly for skin health. The region is also deeply rooted in the culture of Kokeshi—traditional wooden dolls.
