Naruko Gorge is a magnificent canyon formed by the erosion of the Otari River in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is officially designated as a scenic spot in Miyagi and is part of the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. The landscape is defined by a roughly 4km stretch of sheer cliffs reaching up to 100 meters in height, where white quartz-andesite rock faces contrast beautifully with the lush surrounding greenery. During the autumn season, the deep canyon is transformed into a sea of vibrant colors, making it one of the most renowned autumn foliage viewing spots in the Tohoku region.
This area served as a vital hub during the Edo period, with various post stations such as Nyomae, Kajiyazawa, Nakayama, and Onigashira lining the Dewa and Ugo highways.
