DP River (Kura no Machi) is a beautifully preserved historic district located in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture. The area is characterized by its traditional architecture, particularly the black-painted storehouses and white-walled earthen structures dating from the Edo period to the modern era. Historically, this area developed as a vital hub for river transport along the DP River. Today, you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere while admiring the traditional scenery and the many koi fish swimming in the river.
This region flourished as a post town for travelers heading toward Nikko and as a prosperous merchant town connected to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) via river transport. At its peak, it was known as a commercial center for Northern Kanto. Many of the existing buildings date from the late Edo to the mid-Meiji era. Because the area was spared from air raids during the war, many architectural styles from the Taisho and early Showa eras remain intact. Since the late 20th century, preservation efforts have been made to maintain the historic streetscape for tourism.
