Narita City Sakura no Yama is a park located in the Komaiino district of Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, situated just north of the Narita International Airport runway. Spanning approximately 4.9 hectares, this elevated hill offers a unique vantage point. The primary attraction is the breathtaking combination of roughly 500 cherry blossom trees and the close-up view of aircraft taking off and landing at Narita International Airport. The site is frequently used as a filming location for television programs and is recognized as a premier sightseeing spot in the Narita area.
The area represents a harmonious coexistence of natural beauty and modern aviation infrastructure. The landscape preserves the traditional culture of cherry blossoms alongside the dynamic energy of one of Japan's primary international gateways. Today, it serves as a destination for both aviation enthusiasts and nature lovers who wish to witness seasonal natural phenomena.
The park features a diverse variety of cherry trees, including Somei-Yoshino, Yamazakura, Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry), and Higan-zakura. Equipped with observation decks and benches, visitors can watch aircraft maneuvering toward the runway through the canopy of blossoms. Under north wind conditions, the takeoff of aircraft toward the north side of the runway can be clearly observed from near the fence along Prefectural Route 44. Additionally, the on-site tourist facility, 'Sora-no-Eki Sakura-kan,' offers local specialties and regional products.
The best time to visit is from late March to mid-May, coinciding with the cherry blossom season. During the peak period from late March to April, you can experience the most spectacular views of blossoms paired with aircraft movements. While daytime offers the best visibility for aircraft spotting, please note that there is no official information regarding night illuminations. The park is open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Visitors can enjoy the simultaneous experience of natural scenery and aviation spectacle. You can relax on the observation decks or benches while watching planes. At 'Sora-no-Eki Sakura-kan,' you can also discover and purchase fresh vegetables from Chiba Prefecture and various souvenirs related to Narita and the airport, allowing you to experience local flavors and culture.
Access to the park is available via community buses or the Narita Airport Transit Bus from the Narita Airport Terminal 2 area. A convenience store is also located very close to the park. For those looking to explore further, the historic Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple area is located within Narita City.
Please observe the following rules: the use of fire (bonfires, cooking, or fireworks) and the operation of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) are strictly prohibited. Picking plants and leaving trash outside of designated areas is also forbidden. For professional photography, a permit is required: 330 JPY per camera per day for photography, and 3,300 JPY for up to 2 hours for film/video production. While parking and restrooms are available, the use of public transportation is highly recommended during the busy cherry blossom season due to expected congestion.
