Nanatsudora Park is a beautifully developed natural park located in the outskirts of Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the authentic "English Landscape Garden," designed by a British landscape consultant using materials imported directly from the UK. The park is dotted with pavilions and follies that mimic the British countryside, creating a seamless harmony between man-made structures and the natural environment.
The park is divided into two main areas: Area A, which centers around the "Secret Flower Garden" with its 50-meter diameter circular flowerbed, and Area B, which consists of five dams and various ponds. The park gained international attention as a filming location for the movie "Thermae Romae," as its scenery evokes the atmosphere of ancient Rome.
The development of the park began in 1977 as part of the "Furusato no Mori" (Hometown Forest) project. In 1989, it was selected as a "Furusato Ikimono no Sato" (Hometown Wildlife Habitat) by the Environment Agency (now the Ministry of the Environment), highlighting its importance in preserving a rich ecosystem. The name "Nanatsudora" is derived from the existence of seven ancient burial mounds (kofun) once found at the Gongen-yama cave group within the park.
Despite facing challenges such as facility damage during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the park has successfully maintained its beautiful, harmonious landscape. The popularity of the park saw a significant boost following the release of the film "Thermae Romae" in 2012.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of spots inspired by British design. The "Secret Flower Garden" is a standout, characterized by its elegant circular flowerbed layout. The pavilions and follies scattered throughout the park are constructed with stone and brick brought from the UK, creating a unique fusion of Western architecture and Japanese natural scenery.
Water features are another highlight. The landscape features dams, ponds, and an area known as the "Serpentine," where water and greenery blend beautifully. The park also serves as a vital habitat for local wildlife, including various species of dragonflies and fireflies (Genji and Heike fireflies).
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the "Secret Flower Garden" is a popular spot for viewing seasonal blooms. Because of the dense forest, visitors can experience the changing colors and textures of nature throughout the year.
For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours. Please note that lighting is kept to a minimum at night to protect the natural environment, making the park very dark. If you plan to walk near the dams or water areas after sunset, please carry a flashlight and watch your step carefully.
Nanatsudora Park is an ideal location for nature observation and forest bathing. You can stroll along wooden stairs and forest paths set against the backdrop of the English-style garden. It is a wonderful place to observe seasonal insects and plants in their natural habitat.
The park is adjacent to several agricultural research facilities and the Agricultural General Center. It is easily accessible by car via the Mito Kita Smart IC or the Naka IC on the Joban Expressway.
Due to the natural terrain, the park contains unpaved paths, stairs, and slopes. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
