Nanaore-no-taki Falls is a scenic landmark located in Osako-cho, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature of this waterfall is a phenomenon known as "Hyonguri," where the water appears to leap out sideways with great force. The way the water cascades through multiple bends is a rare and captivating sight found only in a few places across Japan. Surrounded by lush greenery, this area offers a different, beautiful face with every season.
The area is part of the rich natural environment of Hanamaki City, where the beauty of natural formations has been cherished for generations. While there are no specific historical buildings or monuments, the site is a beloved destination for local nature enthusiasts and hikers who come to witness the awe-inspiring power of the natural world.
The primary attraction is the unique way the water jets sideways. This "Hyonguri" phenomenon is created by a combination of the terrain and the force of the water, providing a powerful visual impact. Additionally, from early to mid-October, the surrounding trees turn vibrant colors, creating a stunning contrast between the white cascading water and the brilliant autumn foliage.
The recommended time to visit is from early to mid-October to witness the peak of the autumn colors. During this period, the harmony between the flowing water and the colorful forest is at its most beautiful. While the summer months (July to September) offer lush green scenery, please be cautious when walking near the stream, as water levels may rise due to rainfall.
The main activities are hiking and nature walks. There are two primary routes to reach the falls. The first is the "Oroshi-zawa Route," which follows the stream upward from a marked starting point. The second is the "Take Parking Lot Route," which leads through a serene cedar forest via a mountain trail. Both routes offer an immersive experience where you can feel the sounds and textures of the wilderness.
The Hanamaki area is also famous for its connection to the writer Kenji Miyazawa and its many hot spring (onsen) resorts. A common itinerary involves visiting Nanaore-no-taki Falls for a hike followed by a relaxing soak at one of the nearby Hanamaki Onsen-kyo hot spring villages. The region is a perfect base for exploring the untouched natural beauty of Iwate Prefecture.
Since this is a natural wilderness area, proper preparation is essential. We highly recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes rather than light footwear. Please carry sufficient water and snacks. While there are no entrance fees, it is wise to carry cash for any potential local parking fees. As this area is a habitat for bears, carrying a bear bell is strongly recommended for safety. Please ensure you carry all trash back with you to protect the environment. There are no restrictions on photography, but please be mindful of the surroundings. Note that the area is not wheelchair accessible due to the unpaved paths and rugged terrain; please exercise caution while walking.
