The Nanao Castle Ruins is a designated National Historic Site located in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. This site served as a significant mountain castle from the Muromachi to the Sengoku periods, having been expanded by the Noto Hatakeyama clan. Today, visitors can explore the history of the castle through the Nanao Castle History Museum and the Kaiko-kan, a facility housed in a traditional residence. The castle grounds themselves are open 24 hours a day, allowing you to enjoy the natural topography and the surrounding landscape at any time.
Located in the Kashima District of Noto, this was a massive mountain castle spanning approximately 2.5 km north-to-south and 1 km east-to-west. It is characterized by its strategic layout, with enclosures (kuruwa) and fortifications positioned along the ridges, a design expanded by the Noto Hatakeyama clan. The site is highly regarded in the field of castle archaeology for its scale and well-preserved structures. The area also features various monuments and stone pillars dedicated to local history and folk songs.
There are several facilities near the ruins dedicated to preserving historical records. The Nanao Castle History Museum offers exhibits on the castle's origins, detailed diagrams of historical battles, and CG reconstructions that bring the past to life. The adjacent Kaiko-kan allows you to experience the atmosphere of a traditional residence while viewing historical artifacts such as folding screens and Japanese swords. Additionally, the Nanao Castle-yama Observatory near the Honmaru (inner bailey) provides a breathtaking view of the entire Nanao City area.
Since the castle grounds are open 24 hours, you can visit at any time. However, if you plan to visit the museums or the Kaiko-kan, please check their specific operating hours. The most pleasant times to visit are during May, September, or October. Notably, in December, the area around the Nanao Castle-yama Observatory is illuminated, offering a beautiful change in scenery for a nighttime visit.
Visitors can engage deeply with history through various activities. At the Nanao Castle History Museum, you can collect the official stamp for one of the "Japan 100名城 (Japan's Top 100 Castles)." For a more professional experience, you can join a guided tour led by local volunteers (reservation required) to walk through the site with expert commentary. These exhibits provide a profound understanding of the complex structures used in ancient Japanese fortifications.
The area at the foot of the castle features a traditional castle town atmosphere. Nearby, you can also find local temples such as Choreiji. To reach the site, you can take a taxi from JR Nanao Station or use the local circulation bus "Marin-go" to the "Joshi Shiryo-kan Mae" stop. If driving, the most common route is via the Noto-Etsu Expressway, exiting at the Nanao-Shiroyama IC and heading toward the Honmaru parking lot.
Because the castle ruins include slopes and unpaved paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. When visiting the museums, please be mindful of their operating hours and closing days (Mondays, the day after public holidays, and during the winter break period). The admission fee for the Nanao Castle History Museum is 200 JPY for adults, and it is free for junior high school students and younger. If you wish to participate in a volunteer-led guided tour, please ensure you make a reservation in advance.
