Nanakura Dam is a massive rock-fill dam standing 125 meters high with a volume of 7.38 million cubic meters, located in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture. The structure is characterized by its use of natural stone masonry, a design that integrates seamlessly with the local topography. Construction began in 1971, and the dam was completed in 1979. There is a parking area available near the dam, making it an ideal spot for visitors to enjoy the harmonious colors of the lake and the surrounding mountains during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves.
Similar to the nearby Takase Dam, construction on Nanakura Dam began in 1971. Upon its completion in 1979, it began its vital role in hydroelectric power generation. The rock-fill structure, utilizing natural stones, was specifically designed to respect and utilize the unique geological features and natural environment of the region.
The most striking feature of Nanakura Dam is its immense rock-fill structure. The area surrounding the dam reservoir offers a constantly changing landscape of seasonal flora. Visitors can witness the dramatic shifts in color across the mountains and the lake surface, particularly during the vibrant spring greenery and the brilliant autumn foliage seasons. Near the plaza below the dam, you can also observe various seasonal plants and local vegetation.
The scenery changes beautifully throughout the year. From spring to summer, the landscape is dominated by lush, fresh greenery, while autumn brings a spectacular display of fall colors that reflect beautifully on the water. In the summer months, visitors may even spot the blooming of the Dioscorea japonica (Japanese yam) flowers around the plaza and the insects that frequent the area.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the natural surroundings of the dam. The area around the reservoir and the parking lot allows for easy movement to observe the seasonal changes in plant life and the natural landscape. Please note, however, that as this is a functional dam facility, access to certain restricted areas is strictly prohibited for safety and operational reasons.

Since the dam is located within a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While most transactions at nearby facilities may accept cash or credit cards, direct payments at the dam facility itself are rare. Please check for English signage on-site to assist with your visit.
