Located in the Kikuminato (Akasaki) area of Kotoura Town, Tottori Prefecture, "Namishigure San dodokasa" is a magnificent stone sculpture created by the world-renowned sculptor Masayuki Nagare. The installation stands 4.33 meters tall and is crafted from white mica stone. The three figures are positioned along the edge of the Sea of Japan, creating a profound harmony between the monumental art and the surrounding natural environment.
This sculpture was conceived as a symbol of the "traveler's form" (tabisugata). Masayuki Nagare is a celebrated artist known for his ability to express deep themes through the texture and form of his materials. The three figures made of white mica stone are deeply integrated into the coastal landscape of Kotoura, serving as a permanent part of the local scenery. The way the expression of the stone and the surrounding landscape shifts with the changing weather and seasons is a unique characteristic of this site.
The centerpiece is the three-figure stone sculpture reaching a height of 4.33 meters. The unique texture of the white mica stone creates a stunning visual interplay with the rugged waves of the Sea of Japan and the shifting colors of the sky. Whether under a bright sunny sky, during a light rain, or amidst a storm, the visual impression of the sculpture changes dramatically. Because it is located right on the coast, the presence of the sculpture feels different with every season and tide.
As this is an outdoor coastal site, the weather significantly influences the experience. On clear days, the bright texture of the white mica stone stands out beautifully against the deep blue of the Sea of Japan. On cloudy or windy days, the atmosphere becomes more dramatic, offering a different perspective on the sculpture's texture and the surrounding landscape. The site is an open-air space accessible 24 hours a day.
The primary way to enjoy this site is through the contemplative appreciation of the sculpture. Visitors can observe the symbolic "traveler" form expressed by the artist while enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. The surrounding area is a beautiful, natural coastal zone, making it a wonderful spot for a peaceful stroll. Please note that the main activity is visual appreciation; please refrain from touching the artwork.
