Nakayama Senmaida is a spectacular terraced rice field located in the Nakayama district at the heart of Shodoshima Island, Kagawa Prefecture. It has been officially selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan.' The landscape consists of approximately 800 terraced paddies of various sizes layered one above another. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: from the spring and early summer when the water-filled paddies act as mirrors reflecting the sky, to the autumn when the rice stalks turn a brilliant golden hue, and through the quiet of winter.
This region has preserved the traditional techniques of constructing rice paddies that follow the natural contours of the land for generations. The Nakayama district maintains a quintessential Japanese rural landscape where human ingenuity meets natural topography. A significant part of the local culture is the "Mushi-okuri" (pest control ritual), a traditional event deeply rooted in the agricultural lifestyle of the area. This landscape serves as a living testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and human activity.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking sight of the multi-layered terraced fields. During the period when the fields are filled with water, the surface acts like a mirror, reflecting the colors of the sky and creating a stunning visual effect. In early autumn, you can witness the sight of heavy, golden rice ears swaying in the breeze. The surrounding area also offers a peaceful view of a traditional Japanese farming village.
The appeal of Nakayama Senmaida lies in its seasonal transformations. Spring and summer are ideal for seeing the sky reflected in the water, while early autumn offers the beautiful golden scenery of ripening rice. You can also experience the local culture through traditional events like the 'Nakayama Senmaida Mushi-okuri.' Occasionally, special evening events are held where lanterns or traditional lights illuminate the landscape, offering a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.
Visitors can participate in local guided tours to learn about the unique landscape and rural culture of Nakayama. Depending on the tour, you can enjoy walking through the scenery and tasting local delicacies, such as the 'Tanada Onigiri Set' (rice ball meal made with local ingredients). During the Mushi-okuri festival period, there are also rare opportunities to witness and experience unique local traditions firsthand.
The Nakayama district is surrounded by various other sightseeing spots on Shodoshima. You can easily incorporate these into a larger island-wide itinerary, visiting historical sites or natural wonders. For transportation around the island, buses and taxis are the most common methods of travel.
As you will be exploring outdoor terraced fields, we recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy walking shoes. If you plan to participate in the Mushi-okuri event or a guided tour, please be prepared for uneven terrain and steep slopes.
