Nakano Momijiyama (Nakano Shrine) is a premier destination for autumn foliage located in Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture. Its history dates back to 1802, when the Lord of the Hirosaki Clan, Tsugaru Naoyoshi, brought over 100 varieties of maple seedlings from Kyoto to transplant here. Today, the site is home to magnificent 200-year-old maple trees and massive cedar trees estimated to be between 500 and 700 years old. These ancient trees are designated as natural monuments of the city. The vibrant colors of the maple leaves create a breathtaking spectacle when paired with the local waterfalls and mountain streams.
The site is home to Nakano Shrine, one of the prestigious "Tsugaru Sanfudo" (Three Fudos of Tsugaru), alongside Hasezawa Shrine and Kokujoji Temple. The tradition of cultivating maple trees here has been preserved since the Hirosaki Clan era, making it a significant cultural landmark. The area's beauty has long been recognized internationally; the famous English traveler Isabella Bird once visited and recorded the enchanting charm of this landscape in her writings.
The most spectacular sight is the autumn foliage. The maple trees surrounding the streams and waterfalls create a vivid, multi-colored reflection on the water's surface. Visitors can also observe the massive, ancient trees that serve as natural monuments, adding a sense of profound history to the landscape. The area also contains historical traces, such as the ruins of the old Todokan, which add cultural depth to your visit.
The peak season for the most intense colors is from September to November. During the height of autumn, the contrast between the colorful maple leaves and the flowing water is particularly striking. Visiting during daylight hours is ideal for observing the vivid colors of the waterfalls and foliage. As the area is a natural site, it is best enjoyed during the day when the natural light enhances the scenery.

Kuroishi City offers many other historical and natural sites. You can easily combine a visit to Nakano Shrine with other "Tsugaru Sanfudo" sites, such as Hasezawa Shrine or Kokujoji Temple. Since the area is easily accessible by car, many travelers combine these visits with nearby hot spring (onsen) resorts for a complete regional experience.
