The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum is the world's only museum dedicated to the works of Keith Haring, a defining artist of 1980s American art. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in Kobuchizawa, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the museum is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery. Built around a collection gathered by the founder, Kazuo Nakamura, the museum allows visitors to experience the profound message of 'from darkness to hope' embedded in Haring's art.
The museum opened its doors in 2007. The founder, Kazuo Nakamura, first encountered Keith Haring's work in New York in 1987, which inspired him to begin his lifelong collection. The museum's architecture was designed by the renowned contemporary architect Atsushi Kitagawara. In 2015, the museum underwent a renewal, adding the Freedom Exhibition Room and the Museum Theater (courtyard), evolving into a space that communicates Haring's philosophy and life through even more diverse forms.

The energy radiating from these pieces resonates with the surrounding natural environment, creating a unique atmosphere. The museum is located in the Kobuchizawa area at the southern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty, with many spots perfect for hiking and nature walks. Access from Kobuchizawa Station is approximately 8 minutes by taxi, and the area is easily accessible by car. You can plan a wonderful trip combining nature and art using local tourism maps.
To preserve the environment, large luggage, backpacks, food and drinks, cameras other than smartphones (such as DSLRs, compact cameras, or action cameras), umbrellas, pens (other than pencils), and dangerous goods are prohibited in the exhibition rooms. Free coin lockers (requiring 100 yen coins) are available. The entire museum and its surrounding areas are non-smoking. As there are stairs leading to the rooftop and courtyard, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing.
