Nakamachi Church is a historic Catholic church located in Nakamachi, Nagasaki City. Construction began in 1891, and the church was officially consecrated on September 8, 1897. This church has played a vital role in the Christian culture of Nagasaki. Its most striking feature is its history of surviving the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945. The outer walls and spire remain in their original form, making it a precious designated site of atomic bomb devastation in Nagasaki City. Today, it is carefully preserved as a place of prayer for the faithful and a site to pass down history to future generations.
The history of the church is deeply intertwined with the history of Christianity from the Edo period to the Meiji era. The original site of the church was established on the grounds of the former Sakuramachi Prison, where Christians were once held. In 1889, the church was established at its current location, the site of the former Omura clan residence, through the dedication of Father Yoshisuke Shimauchi. The construction was carried out under the design of Father Papino from France, supported by many benefactors and donations from France. However, the atomic bombing in 1945 caused immense damage, leaving only the outer walls and spire after the rest of the building was destroyed. In 1951, the church was rebuilt using these original elements, leading to its current appearance. Consequently, Nakamachi Church stands as a symbol of Nagasaki's suffering and eventual reconstruction.
