Nakajima Park serves as a refreshing urban oasis located right in the center of Sapporo. The park is famous for its ever-changing scenery: the delicate beauty of cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring, lush greenery in summer, brilliant autumn foliage in fall, and a serene, white world of snow in winter. With its historic buildings and tranquil ponds, the park offers much more than just a stroll; it is a place for cultural discovery and seasonal adventure.
The park is home to precious architectural treasures from the Meiji era. Most notably, the Hohei-kan building stands as a testament to the history of the Kaitakushi (Development Commission) era. Originally built as a hotel by the Meiji government, it has served various roles over the decades, including a community hall and a wedding venue. Seeing such a dignified historical structure nestled within a natural landscape provides a profound sense of the history and development of Sapporo.
The central pond is the iconic symbol of the park. The contrast between the calm water where waterfowl swim and the colorful trees surrounding the banks offers a breathtaking view that changes with every season. Visitors can also enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere of the area near the historic buildings, where modern designs blend seamlessly with heritage sites. Inside the Hohei-kan, the luxurious carpets and elegant chandeliers offer a nostalgic glimpse into the high-class lifestyle of the Meiji era.

There is no shortage of things to do depending on the season. From late April to early October, you can enjoy leisurely boat rides on the Shobu Pond. In winter, the park transforms into a playground for snow enthusiasts, offering cross-country skiing with free equipment rentals available. For a relaxing break, several nearby cafes and sandwich shops offer delicious treats and organic coffee to enjoy while soaking in the view.
The area surrounding Nakajima Park is perfect for exploring Sapporo's local food and shopping scenes. A local favorite is the famous sandwich shop 'Sandria,' located nearby, which serves popular sandwiches made from long-standing recipes. The park's central location makes it an incredibly convenient base for sightseeing, with easy access to many of Sapporo's major attractions.
For walking around the park, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Depending on the season, please prepare accordingly: sun protection for summer and heavy winter gear (thick coats, gloves, and hats) for the cold months. Regarding payments, while many nearby cafes and facilities accept credit cards and transit IC cards, some may still require cash. While photography of the scenery is encouraged, please respect the rules regarding the interior of historical buildings. Most main paths are accessible, but please be aware that some areas may have uneven surfaces due to the natural terrain. As a public space, please be mindful of other visitors and take your trash home with you.
