Nusamai Bridge is a landmark located at the mouth of the Kushiro River in Kushiro, Hokkaido. The name is said to originate from the Ainu word 'nusa-o-mai,' meaning 'the place where the ritual site exists.' Spanning the lower reaches of the river, the bridge is one of the most iconic structures representing the natural beauty of Kushiro.

History & Cultural Background

The bridge has a long history of reconstruction. It began with the wooden 'Aihoku Bridge' built in 1889. While several subsequent wooden bridges were built, they unfortunately succumbed to the elements. In 1928, the fourth bridge was completed using reinforced concrete. The current fifth-generation bridge was completed on November 26, 1976. A unique aspect of this bridge is the 'Four Seasons of Eastern Hokkaido' sculptures, which were funded through a local community movement, making it a rare example of a bridge with such culturally significant public-funded art.
