Nagoya Castle is a Special Historic Site that marks the completion of early modern Japanese castle architecture. Construction began in 1610 under the direction of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The site is a masterpiece of engineering and prestige, featuring a five-story, five-level keep topped with the iconic golden Shachihoko (golden dolphins), the Honmaru Palace—a premier example of the Bukeyaku-style Shoin architecture—and the massive Ninomaru Garden. Even as a central landmark in the modern city, the castle maintains its historical grandeur with high stone walls, deep moats, and lush greenery.
Following the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603, the castle was built by figures such as Kato Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori to serve as a strategic deterrent against western and northern lords and to defend the Tokaido road. After the era of the first lord, Tokugawa Yoshihide, it flourished for 260 years as the primary residence of the Owari Tokugawa family, the most senior of the three branches of the Tokugawa clan. The development of the surrounding castle town formed the blueprint for modern- much of Nagoya's current urban structure, and every element of its architecture and gardens reflects the advanced technology and culture of early modern Japan.
Every element of Nagoya Castle holds immense historical value. Inside the Honmaru Palace, you will find breathtaking gold-leafed sliding door paintings (Kinpeki Shoheki) created by the Kano school of painters, set within a magnificent Shoin-style space. The architectural design, including the base of the keep and the massive corner turrets (sumiyagura), showcases the pinnacle of Edo-period engineering. The Ninomaru Garden, one of the largest in Japan, offers a stunning view of the landscape. These sites serve as vital cultural heritages that allow visitors to experience the grandeur of the lost original structures through detailed historical records and reconstructions.
Nagoya Castle is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The bright daylight hours are ideal for observing the intricate details of the golden paintings in the Honmaru Palace, the texture of the stone walls, and the silhouette of the castle keep. At night, the castle can be viewed from nearby observation points such as Midland Square or the Nagoya Peace Park Aqua Tower, where it is beautifully illuminated. The scenery of the surrounding gardens changes with the seasons, offering a different aesthetic experience depending on when you visit.
Visitors can explore the reconstructed architectural styles of the Honmaru Palace and learn about the historical landscapes of the Edo period. For a unique perspective, you can enjoy the scenery from the water via the "Nagoya Horikawa Cruise" or take photos from various observation spots around the castle.
