Nagohuru Castle is a mountain fortress located in Minakami Town, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture, characterized by its unique status as a natural stronghold. Situated near the confluence of the Tone and Akaya Rivers, the castle was built utilizing the rugged terrain of steep cliffs on three sides for defense. Originating as a residence during the Muromachi period, it became a strategically vital stronghold during pivotal historical turning points. Today, it is a designated historical site of the prefecture, where the main enclosures (Honmaru and Ninomaru) still retain much of their original structural essence.
The history of this site dates back to the establishment of a residence by the Nagohuru clan during the Muromachi period. Later, it evolved into a critical frontline base during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The castle is historically significant as a site that influenced Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign against the Hojo clan in Odawara. It stands as a symbol of the strategic importance of the region during Japan's era of warring states. Ongoing preservation efforts continue to protect and convey its immense historical value.
The castle follows a 'renkaku' style (consecutive enclosure style), where the structures of the Uma-dashi, San-kaku, Ni-kaku, Honmaru, and Sasa-kaku are arranged in a line. In the center of the Honmaru (main enclosure), a stone monument stands as a testament to the site's weight of history. From the Sasa-kaku enclosure, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, providing a visual understanding of how the natural terrain was utilized for defense. The well-maintained paths and traces of the earthen embankments (dorui) serve as precious relics of ancient Japanese fortification techniques.
It is best to visit Nagohuru Castle during daylight hours throughout the year. If you wish to participate in a guided tour, it is highly recommended to check the operating hours of the information center in advance. Surrounded by lush nature, the scenery changes beautifully with each season, offering a different perspective on the ancient fortress with every visit.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by local history volunteers. Through the information center, you can gain much deeper insights into the historical background of the site. Additionally, you can purchase a 'Goshoin' (a traditional commemorative seal/stamp) as a proof of your visit. There are two types available: a Washi paper version and a wooden version, each offering a unique texture. These are sold exclusively on-site and serve as wonderful historical keepsakes.
Minakami Town is home to many other natural and historical attractions. The area features the scenic Tanigawa Peaks, Minakami Onsen (hot spring resorts), and various dams and valleys. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a tour of the surrounding natural landscapes. The area is accessible via the JR Joetsu Line (Kokan Station).
