Nagayu Onsen is a renowned hot spring area located in Takita, O-ita Prefecture. The history of Nagayu Onsen is deep, with mentions dating back to the early Nara period. In 1706, a tea house was built for the Nakagawa family, the lords of the Oka Clan. In 1933, a professor from Kyushu Imperial University researched the benefits of the carbonated springs, bringing scientific recognition to the area. The area was designated as a National Health and Recreation Area in 1978. Furthermore, Takita City shares a sister-city relationship with Bad Klöztlingen, a German city famous for its carbonated springs, which has influenced the Western-style architectural designs found in some of the local bathhouses.
