The Nagasaki Peron Championship is a traditional boat racing event deeply rooted in the history of Nagasaki. A single Peron boat carries rowers, drummers, and a helmsman, all working in perfect unison to propel the vessel forward. The sight of the entire crew rowing in a single, powerful motion to the rhythmic beat of drums and gongs is truly breathtaking and serves as a major highlight for spectators.

The greatest thrill of the race is the exquisite teamwork displayed as every rower strikes the water in perfect timing with the drums. Another unique aspect is the corporate-sector races, where various companies and organizations compete against one another. Seeing boats adorned with the names of local businesses racing through the water is a scene unique to this championship.
The championship is typically held in July. As this is an outdoor event held during the peak of summer, it is essential to prepare for the heat and intense sunlight. We recommend following the race progress closely to enjoy the high-energy atmosphere of the competition.
During the event, there is a scheduled "Experience Peron" program where the general public can actually board a boat. This offers a rare and precious opportunity to feel the rhythm of the drums and the power of the oars firsthand. Please note that the Experience Peron is conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration typically starting around 9:00 AM on the day of the event. Participation is not available for preschool children, and elementary school students must be accompanied by a guardian.
The Matsubaeda International Tourist Pier, the venue for the event, is located near many of Nagasaki's most iconic landmarks. We recommend planning a sightseeing itinerary that combines watching the Peron races with visits to the Glover Garden, Oura Catholic Church, and Nagasaki Seaside Park to fully enjoy the history and beautiful scenery of the region.
As this is an outdoor event located by the sea, please take full precautions against the sun and heat. We highly recommend bringing a hat, parasol, sunscreen, plenty of beverages, and a towel. Please be aware that there are no permanent shade structures or tents provided at the venue, so you must manage your own sun protection.
