Much of Endo's work is set in the Sotome region of Nagasaki, a place that serves as the spiritual origin of his literature. In the exhibition rooms, visitors can explore materials, photographs, and essay panels detailing his life and works, allowing for a deep journey into the spiritual and cultural background of his writing.
The facility originally opened in 2000 as the 'Sotome Municipal Shusaku Endo Literature Museum.' Following the merger into Nagasaki City, it is now operated as a municipal museum. The Sotome area is historically significant as a site known for its hidden Christian communities and serves as the setting for one of Endo's most famous masterpieces, 'Silence.' The museum plays a vital role in preserving and sharing the history and culture of this unique region through the lens of literature.
