The Nagasaka Rice Terraces, located in Nagasaka, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture, are officially recognized as one of "Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The landscape features approximately 120 terraced rice paddies cascading down the mountain slopes. The most striking feature is the harmony between the stepped fields and the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range in the background, representing a classic and iconic Japanese rural landscape.
Rice cultivation using the natural topography has been practiced in this region since ancient times. The Nagasaka Rice Terraces are a cultural landscape where these stepped fields have been meticulously maintained over many generations. Today, the area supports a "Rice Terrace Owner System," which serves not just as a scenic viewpoint but also as a hub for community interaction and the preservation of traditional agricultural-based culture.
The primary attraction is the arrangement of about 120 rice paddies overlapping along the mountain slope. The visual character of the terraces changes dramatically depending on the season. During the rice planting season, the water in the paddies reflects the sky and sunlight, creating a stunning, shimmering effect that harmonizes with the surrounding nature. In summer, the fields turn a lush, vibrant green, while in autumn, the landscape is covered in a sea of golden rice ears.
