Nagao Tsurugi Jinja is a shrine located in Shiranai Town, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, characterized by its stunning seaside landscape. The most striking feature is the torii gate that appears to stand within the sea, its appearance changing dramatically with the rising and falling tides. The shrine is also a famous observation point for the 'Shiranui' (a mysterious atmospheric light phenomenon/mirage) that occurs under specific conditions, making it a profound destination where natural phenomena and ancient history intertwine.
The shrine boasts an incredibly ancient history, with its founding dating back to the year 713 (Wado 6). According to local legend, the deity of the sea, Wadatsumi-no-kami, arrived at this land upon a giant ray (stingray). Because the tail of this creature was shaped like a sword (tsurugi), the shrine became known as 'Tsurugi Jinja.' The name 'Nagao' is also said to derive from the shape of the ray's tail. This area is recognized as a designated scenic spot in Japan and is even linked to the historical chronicles of Emperor Keiko found in the Nihon Shoki.
The primary attraction is the torii gate standing in the ocean. Because the view changes significantly depending on whether the tide is high or low, visitors can experience a completely different atmosphere depending on the time of their visit. Additionally, during the 'Hassaku' period (the first day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar), the site is famous for the opportunity to witness the 'Shiranui'—a mirage phenomenon that appears over the Yatsushiro Sea (Shiranui Sea) during the early morning low tide. This phenomenon is a rare sight that requires specific topographical and meteorological conditions, offering a truly mystical experience. Furthermore, the shrine has long been visited by those seeking blessings for digestive health.
Recommended visits vary by season and time of day. For example, mid-December is considered an ideal time for photographing the torii gate against a beautiful sunset. If you wish to witness the 'Shiranui' phenomenon, you must visit during the early morning hours of the first day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar during low tide. For daytime visitors, we recommend observing how the tides change the appearance of the torii, while evening visitors can enjoy the serene coastal scenery at dusk.
