Nagakushi-yama Park Observatory is a premier viewpoint located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, offering a high-altitude perspective of the beautiful Kujukushima islands. Spanning an expansive area of approximately 4.7 hectares, this park provides a serene view of the calm sea against the backdrop of the Kujukushima islands within Saikai National Park. The highlight of the park is the spring season, when roughly 100,000 azaleas blanket the mountain slopes, creating a vibrant contrast against the deep blue of the sea and sky. The park is well-maintained with paved walkways and barrier-free facilities, making it an accessible destination for visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in nature.
The area is characterized by its complex rias coastline, which has preserved a rich and diverse natural environment over many years. Nagakushi-yama Park was developed as a hub to allow the public to enjoy this local natural beauty. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, serving as a symbol of the region's natural heritage. In particular, the blooming of the azaleas in spring has long been a major attraction, drawing visitors to witness the colorful transformation of the landscape. As a scenic spot that exists in harmony with nature, the park plays a vital role in the local tourism industry.
From the observatory, you can enjoy a vast panorama stretching from Mt. Atago through the Kujukushima islands to Oshima. The park also features a popular photo spot with a monument displaying the characters for "Kujukushima." During the spring (April to May), the "Azalea Festival" takes place, where the 100,000 blossoms turn the slopes into a sea of pink and red. For families, the park offers great recreational-value features such as the "Chibikko Hiroba" (Kids' Plaza) and a 100-meter long roller slide, making it a perfect destination for children and parents alike.
The scenery changes significantly with the seasons, with the peak being the azalea season in spring (April–May). During the bright daylight hours, the blue of the sea is most striking, while at dusk, you can witness a beautiful color gradation in the sky. The calm sea and island views remain beautiful throughout summer and autumn. Please note that operating hours vary by season: from March to September, the park is open until 20:00, and from October to February, it closes at 19:00. Visiting around sunset is highly recommended to see the changing colors of the sky.
Visitors can enjoy the elevated views using the well-maintained ramps and paths. Families can enjoy the outdoor play areas, including the roller slide at the Kids' Plaza. The park is also an excellent spot for a refreshing stroll in nature. Many visitors use the observatory area for landscape photography or take commemorative photos with the Kujukushima monument. It is an ideal place to spend a quiet, peaceful time surrounded by natural beauty.
The surrounding area offers various ways to experience the nature of Kujukushima more deeply. For instance, the Nagakushi-yama Campground allows for an overnight stay in the heart of nature. If you head toward central Sasebo, you will find many restaurants serving local specialties such as Sasebo Lemon Steak and unique local curries. The area is also part of a scenic driving route that circles the Kujukushima coastline.
As the park contains slopes and some stairs, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring a hat to protect against sunlight and dress according to the season. While the park features barrier-free ramps, some stairs are present. While entry to the park is free, please carry cash or a credit card for nearby facilities or transportation. Photography of the scenery is free and encouraged, but please follow local etiquette. If you plan to use the campground or nearby facilities, we recommend checking for reservations in advance.
