Nagaike Shinsui Park is a scenic park situated on the northern shore of Lake Yamanaka, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. The most striking feature of this location is the virtually unobstructed view, allowing visitors to witness the full, majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji directly across the lake. Because Lake Yamanaka is one of the closest lakes to Mount Fuji, the scale and presence of the mountain are truly overwhelming.
This area has long been cherished as a site of natural beauty and a place of spiritual connection to Mount Fuji. While the park is a modern recreational space designed for tourists and travelers to rest during drives, it has also become a significant cultural landmark for photographers. The phenomenon of 'Diamond Fuji'—where the sun appears to rest on the mountain peak—draws enthusiasts from around the world to witness this rare natural alignment.
The primary draw of the park is the ever-changing expression of Mount Fuji dictated by the seasons and the time of day. A highlight for many is the 'Double Diamond Fuji' observed in mid-November and early February, where the sun aligns with the summit and reflects beautifully off the lake surface. During the clear winter months, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji appears exceptionally sharp and vivid. The park also features traditional gazebos (azumaya), providing a comfortable place to sit and soak in the view.
The scenery evolves beautifully throughout the year. In spring, you can enjoy Mount Fuji framed by blooming cherry blossoms. In summer, the view is characterized by a clear blue sky and a lush green mountain, though it is highly recommended to visit in the morning as clouds often form in the afternoon. Autumn brings vibrant foliage to the surrounding trees, creating a stunning contrast with the mountain. Winter offers the clearest air and is the best season for witnessing the Diamond Fuji. For the most dramatic visual experience, aim to visit during the evening when the sun begins its descent.
The area around the park is equipped with well-maintained paths suitable for jogging, walking, and cycling along the lakeshore. Visitors can use the onsite gazebos to rest while enjoying the breeze. Whether you are there for intense photography or a light stroll to refresh your mind, the tranquil atmosphere of the lakeside provides a perfect escape.
The area surrounding Nagaike Shinsui Park is dotted with various accommodations, including pensions and hotels along the shores of Lake Yamanaka. Staying overnight allows you to experience the serene, quiet beauty of the lakeside at dawn. The park is also conveniently located near the Yamanakako IC of the Higashi-Fujigoko Road, making it an easy stop on a scenic driving route.
The lakeside environment can be significantly windier and colder than urban areas. If you plan to stay through the evening or during winter, please bring heavy, warm clothing. While there are no fees for the park or parking, having cash or a transportation IC card is helpful for nearby travel. While English signage and staff support are limited, the park is a natural space that requires minimal guidance. The parking lot accommodates approximately 80 vehicles, but it can become extremely crowded during Diamond Fuji events, so arriving early or using public transport is advised.
