Legend says that in 1813, timber from the Takada clan caused a blockage that altered the river's flow, resulting in the current waterfall structure. Historically, the appearance of the falls has been a vital seasonal marker for local communities; the waterfall's state, alongside the 'cow shape' snow patterns on Mt. Myoko, traditionally signaled the time to begin rice planting. In the 19th century, the falls became a source of artistic inspiration, frequently depicted in the works of famous literati and painters.
