Naemura Jinja is a significant shrine located in Ayato, Ryuo Town, Gamo District, Shiga Prefecture. The shrine grounds are home to several Important Cultural Properties, most notably the West Main Hall (Nishi-honden), which is designated as a National Treasure. The shrine is widely visited for blessings related to good fortune, matchmaking, family safety, business prosperity, bountiful harvests, childbirth, academic success, and the fulfillment of various wishes.

History & Cultural Background

The West Main Hall (Nishi-honden) is a historic structure reconstructed in 1308 (Tokuji 3). The shrine grounds also feature several other historic buildings, such as the East Main Hall (Higashi-honden), believed to have been rebuilt during the mid-Muromachi period, and the Mikoshi-ko (portable shrine storage) reconstructed in 1536. The presence of the Fudo-do hall, which shows traces of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, highlights the long-standing local faith. The history of the shrine is deeply rooted in local traditions, including the massive "33-year Grand Festival" that was historically held once every 33 years.
