Nada Kuroiwa Suisenkyo is one of Japan's three great narcissus colonies, situated on the steep slopes of Mt. Urutsuba on the southern coast of Minamiawichi, Hyogo Prefecture. Spanning approximately 7 hectares, the area is home to about 5 million wild Japanese narcissus (Nihonzuisen), creating an iconic landscape that defines winter on Awaji Island. Following a renewal in December 2023, the facility has been upgraded to be accessible year-round. The rooftop features an observation deck where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Kii Channel and the changing seasonal colors of nature.
The history of the narcissus here dates back to the Edo period, when local fishermen are said to have planted bulbs that had washed ashore onto the mountainside. Over time, these grew into massive natural colonies. Since the 1950s, local residents have led efforts to preserve and maintain this landscape as a vital part of the region's identity. The area also holds literary significance, as it is the setting for the birthplace of "Otose," the heroine in the novel Otose by Kaoru Funayama. Recently, the site was revitalized with a rebuilt management building and improved walking paths, serving as a new hub for community and visitor interaction.
The primary draw is the sight of millions of white narcissus flowers blooming in unison amidst the winter chill, filling the air with a delicate, sweet fragrance. The newly renovated facility includes "Fuku Cafe" on the second floor, offering a perfect spot to relax while enjoying the view. From the rooftop observation floor, you can gaze out over the calm waters of the Kii Channel and see the distant island of Noshima, which is deeply connected to Japanese creation myths. It is a stunning location where natural beauty meets the sea.
The peak season for the narcissus bloom is typically from mid-January to late February. In mid-January, as the flowers begin to open, the entire hillside transforms into a spectacular blanket of white. Since this is a winter destination, visiting during bright daylight hours will allow you to see the vivid colors of the sea and sky most clearly. While the facility is open year-round, the best time to experience the full glory of the narcissus is between January and February. The scent of the flowers and the reflection of light on the ocean change throughout the day, offering different charms at different hours.
