Nabegataki Falls is a stunning natural landmark located in Oguni, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The landscape is deeply connected to the Aso Caldera, formed by massive volcanic activity approximately 90,000 years ago. The waterfall is famous for its 'curtain-like' appearance, with water cascading down a wide 20-meter span and a 10-meter drop. Its most distinctive feature is the ability to stand behind the falls, allowing you to view the world through a translucent veil of water.

The absolute highlight is the view from behind the falls (Takisura). Standing with the wide curtain of water at your back provides a perspective found at very few other waterfalls. While Nabegataki is accessible year-round, it offers different charms with each season. The water curtain appears particularly vivid during periods of high rainfall or when the surrounding greenery is lush and vibrant. The facility is open from 8:30 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Visiting during daylight hours ensures the best visibility for viewing the scenery from behind the water. Please note that access may be restricted due to weather conditions such as heavy rain, typhoons, or seismic activity.
This is a place to feel the raw energy of nature. By stepping behind the falls, you can experience the sound and the spray of the water, feeling as though you have become part of the landscape. However, please exercise caution when walking near the water or the river area, as there is a risk of falling or falling rocks.
Nabegataki is perfectly positioned for a relaxing itinerary. It is easily accessible from famous hot spring destinations like Kurokawa Onsen and Taketa Onsen, making it a popular stop before or after a soak. The 'Oguni Yu Station' roadside station is also just a 10-minute drive away, serving as a convenient base for exploring the area.
To enjoy the experience fully, wear sturdy, non-slip shoes. The path from the parking lot to the falls involves a 3-minute walk with approximately 120 steps and some steep inclines. Since the area behind the falls can be wet and slippery, practical footwear is highly recommended. Please check the official website in advance regarding reservation requirements, as some periods may require a prior booking to manage crowds.
