Myokoku-ji is a prestigious temple of the Nichiren sect, located in Hosojima, Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. With a history dating back to the founding of the Muromachi Shogunate, the temple is known by its mountain name, Kofukusan. Its most significant feature is the beautiful garden, which has been designated as a National Scenic Spot. This Chisen-shiki (pond-stroll) garden utilizes the natural forest of the nearby Mount Kome as a 'shakkei' (borrowed scenery), creating a harmonious landscape where the man-made garden and the natural mountainside blend perfectly.
The temple's history is profound, with its origins linked to the early spread of Nichiren Buddhism in Kyushu. During the 14th-century Kamakura period, it played a vital role in the religious landscape of the region. During the Edo period, because Hosojima Port served as a transit point for the daimyo's procession (Sankin-kotai), the temple was even used as a lodging site for officials. Records even mention visits by the famous scholar Yasai Soken during the late Edo period. It remains a site where history and local faith have coexisted for centuries.
The primary highlight of Myokoku-ji is its meticulously crafted garden and grand temple gate (Sanmon). The garden features a central pond, islands, stone arrangements, and three distinct artificial hills (Tsukiyama). These elements are designed to represent Buddhist concepts such as the Three Realms or the Pure Land. A simple wooden bridge spans the water, adding to the serene atmosphere. Visitors can also see the 'Meoto Ichou' (Married Ginkgo Trees), a preserved pair of trees estimated to be 300 years old. Furthermore, the temple houses precious treasures, including authentic Mandalas and sacred Buddhist statues, showcasing its immense cultural value.
The garden's appearance changes beautifully depending on the season and the time of day. From the corridor on the south side of the main hall, you can enjoy a tranquil view of the landscape. During the bright daylight hours, the intricate details of the rocks, plants, and the distant mountain scenery are most clearly visible. The changing colors of the foliage throughout the seasons add a dynamic layer of beauty to the experience.
