Myoho-ji is a prominent head temple of the Nichiren sect located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is widely revered as the "Osot-sama of Warding Off Evil," a place where many come to pray for protection against misfortune. The most iconic feature is the lush, moss-covered stone staircase. The breathtaking contrast between the vibrant green moss and the brilliant vermilion Nio-mon Gate makes it one of the most beautiful and quintessential landscapes in all of Kamakura.
Founded in 1253 (Kencho 5), this temple is a sacred site where Nichiren Shonin, the founder of the Nichiren sect, is said to have established his first hermitage in Kamakura. Throughout history, the temple has been a center of devotion. During the Edo period, it enjoyed the patronage of the Tokugawa Shogunate, including the 11th Shogun, Ienari, as well as various daimyo and even the women of the Edo Castle Ooku. Historically, the grounds even featured a "Shogun's Waiting Room" to prepare for the arrival of the Shogun, a testament to its high status.
Myoho-ji is home to numerous structures of immense historical value. The first sight to capture your heart is the vermilion Nio-mon Gate standing before the exquisite mossy stone steps. Other notable structures include the "Somon" (Great Gate) from the Muromachi period, which is a designated cultural property of Kamkaura City, the main hall housing the primary deity, and the elegant Hokke-do Hall. Additionally, certain areas near the top of the grounds offer sweeping views of the surrounding cityscape and the distant sea, creating a perfect harmony between history and nature.
The beauty of Myoho-ji transforms with the seasons. The period from April to June is particularly stunning, as the fresh greenery highlights the lushness of the moss. Please note that access to the stone steps may be restricted at times to protect the delicate moss, so please be mindful of any signage. For the most vivid photography, visit during the bright daylight hours when the contrast between the red gate and green moss is at its peak.
