Muroto Misaki Lighthouse is a first-class lighthouse located at the tip of Muroto Misaki in Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture, at an altitude of 151 meters. Established in 1899, it is home to one of Japan's largest lenses, with a diameter of 2.6 meters. It serves as a vital navigational aid for maritime safety.
Since its installation in 1899, this lighthouse has played a crucial role in ensuring safe passage through Tosa Bay. As a first-class lighthouse, it holds significant importance for the coastline of Kochi Prefecture and is deeply embedded in the region's geographical and historical context. Today, it stands as a preserved structure that tells the story of the area's maritime heritage.
The most striking feature is the massive 2.6-meter diameter lens, which is one of the largest in Japan. The surrounding area offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and natural environment, allowing visitors to appreciate the lighthouse's unique structure and its high-altitude setting. Please note that access to the interior of the lighthouse is strictly limited to the annual "Lighthouse Festival" held in November.
The best time to visit is during the "Lighthouse Festival," held on the Saturday and Sunday closest to November 1st each year. This is the only time visitors can explore the interior structure of the lighthouse. During all other times, visitors can enjoy the impressive exterior and the surrounding scenic views.
Visitors can observe the unique geological formations and the coastline surrounding the lighthouse. During the Lighthouse Festival, you can experience a rare opportunity to see the massive lens and the internal mechanics of the structure. Outside of the festival, the focus is on enjoying the coastal scenery and the lighthouse's exterior architecture.
The Muroto Misaki area is part of a stunning Geopark, characterized by unique geological formations and dramatic coastlines. It is located near other scenic spots within Muroto City, making it a perfect stop for a coastal road trip.
While credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are accepted at larger nearby facilities and for transportation, many small shops and local services around the lighthouse may only accept cash. We recommend carrying Japanese Yen.

No reservation is required to view the exterior of the lighthouse. However, if you wish to enter the interior during the Lighthouse Festival, please check the official schedule in advance as access is limited to specific dates.
As the lighthouse is located on a mountain at 151m altitude, it is often very windy. We highly recommend wearing windproof clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
Photography of the exterior and the surrounding landscape is permitted. If you are visiting during the interior opening period, please follow the specific rules provided by the staff on-site.
The terrain and paths around the lighthouse include steps and slopes. Please be aware that movement is limited for wheelchair users due to the natural topography.
