Muro Ryuuketsu Jinja is a historic shrine located in the Muro area of Uda City, Nara Prefecture. The enshrined deity, Takooka-mi, has been revered since ancient times as the god who controls the rain. Historical records even mention that messengers were sent from the Imperial Court during the Heian period to perform rain-making rituals. Behind the shrine lies the 'Myokichijo Ryuuketsu,' a mystical rock cave believed to be the dwelling of the Dragon God. This area has been treated as a sacred site (Iwakura) where gods reside since ancient times.
The shrine's history is deeply rooted in the worship of the Dragon God, a deity of water. Because the land is dedicated to Takooka-mi, the relationship between the natural environment and spiritual belief is incredibly close, with rituals for rain-making being performed here throughout history. During the autumn festival, a traditional ceremony is held where offerings are carried to the Tenjin-sha shrine within Muro-ji Temple and to this Ryuuket (Dragon Hole) Shrine, featuring a traditional dance performed by male and female Shishi (lion-dogs). These community-rooted rituals are still carefully preserved today.
The most significant feature is the 'Myokichijo Ryuuketsu' located behind the shrine. This rock cave, opening near a mountain stream, has been passed down through generations as the home of the Dragon God. Other notable aspects include the surrounding natural landscape, the architecture that evokes a sense of history, and the traditional dances seen during the autumn festival. Visitors can witness a landscape where nature and faith are seamlessly integrated in a tranquil setting.

For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the daytime; the bright light makes the details of the mountain stream and the rock cave much clearer. Since the environment is very peaceful, a visit during the calm daylight hours is most suitable.
Visitors can experience walking through a sacred space nestled within nature. By passing through the shrine grounds and venturing further into the mountains, you can reach the area surrounding the rock cave where the Dragon God is said to dwell. It is a unique opportunity to physically trace the paths of ancient forms of worship shaped by the natural terrain.
The famous Muro-ji Temple is located nearby. Muro Ryuuketsu Jinja is positioned such that you can access it by traveling upstream along the Muro River.
