The Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group Visitor Center is a guidance facility established to provide a deep, intuitive understanding of the value and charm of the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group, a registered UNESCO World Heritage site. The center's greatest highlight is its high-tech theater experience. Through ultra-high-definition 8K aerial footage projected onto the walls and floor, visitors can experience the immense scale and shape of the giant kofun (ancient burial mounds)—which are difficult to grasp from the ground—as if they were flying through the sky.
Sakai City, where this facility is located, is home to a concentration of massive keyhole-shaped burial mounds that symbolize the advanced political power and culture of ancient Japan. These are recognized as the "Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group" and are an essential part of Japan's historical heritage. The visitor center plays a vital role in communicating the value of these historical assets through modern technology and engaging exhibits. Through the various models and displays, visitors can touch upon the profound depth of the culture built by the people of ancient times.
The facility offers a variety of exhibits and experiences designed for all visitors. First and foremost is the 8K projection mapping, which provides a cinematic view of the landscape. Another standout feature is the exquisite model of the "Emperor Nintoku's Tomb" created by the Osaka University LEGO Club. Using approximately 10,000 LEGO blocks, this model is a highly detailed 1/560 scale reproduction that showcases incredible craftsmanship. Additionally, you can view life-sized models of cylindrical Haniwa (terracotta figures) to learn about the actual structure of the kofun. The center also features unique content related to World Heritage sites, such as sand displays from Wadi Rum, Jordan.
The facility is open year-round, but certain times offer special experiences. The "Photo Time" within the theater allows you to take commemorative photos against the backdrop of the kofun aerial footage. These sessions are scheduled for the 1st session (11:00–11:15), 2nd session (15:00–15:15), and 3rd session (16:00–16:15), allowing you to capture the tomb from specific angles. Furthermore, from March 20, 2026, to March 28, 2027, a free shuttle bus service is scheduled to operate on weekends and holidays to help you explore the surrounding area.
Beyond simple observation, the center offers many interactive content options. The theater's Photo Time provides a special way to view the kofun from an aerial perspective. At the souvenir corner, you can find items perfect for your trip, including snacks, stationery, and goods inspired by the kofun, as well as local Sakai specialties. For added convenience, the tourist information desk offers bicycle rentals and luggage storage services to help you explore the surrounding burial mounds more efficiently.
The visitor center is located right next to the kofun clusters that make up the World Heritage site. Nearby, you can enjoy a stroll through Daisen Park while taking in the historic scenery. If you use the free shuttle bus, you can easily travel to other spots that deepen your understanding of Sakai's history and culture, such as Sakai Risho-no-Mori or Dorset Biagorá Osaka Sakai.
The facility is designed with accessibility in mind and is wheelchair-friendly. Please prepare accordingly to ensure a comfortable visit. Regarding photography, please check the rules for areas outside of the designated Photo Time. If you plan to explore the surrounding kofun area via bicycle, we highly recommend renting a cycle at the center.
