Mototaki Fuku-ryusui is a breathtaking natural landscape located at the foot of Mt. Chokai in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture. Water emerges from the terminal cliffs of Mt. Chokai's lava formations, with approximately 50,000 tons of water flowing out daily across a rock face roughly 30 meters wide. This site has been selected as one of the '100 Best Waters of Japan' due to its exceptional water quality and stunning scenery. The area is characterized by lush green moss and a constant white mist created by the water spray, resulting in a truly ethereal and mystical atmosphere.
This landscape was shaped over tens of thousands of years by lava flows from Mt. Chokai and the cold spring water that has flowed through the earth. The water passes through layers of lava and emerges continuously through cracks in the rock face, maintaining a high level of humidity that supports a rich ecosystem of moss. While a waterfall formerly known as 'Mototaki' existed here, access to the original waterfall area is currently restricted due to cliff instability. Today, this unique spring-fed waterfall is cherished as a precious natural resource of the region.
The most striking feature is the sight of water flowing across the entire 30-meter wide rock face. The water temperature remains low at approximately 10°C (50°F) year-round. During the summer, the temperature difference between the water and the air often creates a white mist, adding a mystical quality to the view. The contrast between the vibrant green moss and the white water spray makes this a favorite spot for photographers. Additionally, the walk from the parking lot to the waterfall via a well-maintained path is a scenic journey in itself.
While the water flows continuously throughout the year, the scenery changes with the seasons. In the summer, the temperature difference between the cold spring water and the warm air often produces a beautiful mist, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The contrast between the deep green moss and the white water is particularly vivid during the lush growing seasons. Please note that visiting at night is not recommended for safety reasons. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours when the natural light enhances the colors of the landscape.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while feeling the raw energy of nature. The approximately 750-meter path from the parking lot is a single trail surrounded by nature, perfect for breathing in fresh, oxygen-rich air. Nearby, you can also visit 'Naso no Shirataki' waterfall for a complete nature tour. Many visitors come specifically for photography; using a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the full, expansive scale of the 30-meter wide waterfall.
The area around Mototaki Fuku-ryusui is dotted with spots that showcase the natural beauty of Mt. Chokai. For instance, 'Naso no Shirataki' is within walking distance, allowing you to enjoy a more profound connection with local water features. Furthermore, within Akita Prefecture, you can combine this nature walk with cultural experiences such as interacting with Akita Inu dogs to create a well-rounded travel itinerary.
