Morito Shrine (Morito Daimyojin) is a historic Shinto shrine located in Hayama, Miura District, Kanagawa Prefecture, where history and nature exist in perfect harmony. Situated near the coastline, it has long been a place of worship and a protector of the local community. The shrine holds deep historical significance due to its connection to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate. Today, it remains a vital spiritual center for locals, frequently used for prayers regarding fertility, easy childbirth, and traditional baby blessings (Omiyamairi).
The history of the shrine dates back to 1180 (Jisho 4). It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo established the shrine by inviting the spirit (bunrei) from the great Mishima Taisha Shrine in Shizuoka. Driven by his deep devotion to Mishima Myojin, Yoritomo sought to establish a spiritual foundation for the Kamakura Shogunate in this region. Consequently, the shrine became a site of worship for successive Kamakura Shoguns and served as a crucial place of prayer for the Miura clan, who ruled the area. Additionally, the grounds contain monuments honoring figures who helped introduce Hayama as a popular resort area in the early Meiji era, linking the shrine to the history of modern Japan.
The shrine grounds are dotted with numerous monuments and cultural assets of great historical value. A must-see is the 'Morito Daimyojin Byakushin,' a natural monument designated by Hayama Town. Other notable ancient trees, such as the 'Sengankomatsu' tree associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo and Wada Yoshimori, are also highlights. Visitors can also see monuments dedicated to Dr. Berthelot and Minister Martino, who played key roles in promoting Hayama as a resort during the early Meiji period.
