Located in Kitagawa Village, Kochi Prefecture, "Monet's Garden - Marmottan" is a garden dedicated to reproducing and inheriting the world of the Impressionist master Claude Monet. The landscape is designed with plants that offer different colors for every season, welcoming visitors with breathtaking views. A unique feature of this garden is its connection to France: the ticket stub from this garden can be used as an admission ticket for the original "Monet's Garden" in Giverny, France—a truly special and rare arrangement.
This garden was born from the passion of Mr. Ug even, the former chairman of the Claude Monet Foundation in France. The garden is not just a botanical space but a place to experience an artistic lifestyle. This is based on the philosophy that Monet integrated art into his daily life, from his garden design to his table settings and tableware. The core of this location is the seamless fusion of nature and art.
The greatest charm of the garden is the water lilies floating on the surface and the vibrant plants surrounding them. Depending on when you visit, you will see a different palette of colors, such as white, blue, purple, or pink. Additionally, at the cafe "Monet no Ie" (Monet's House), you can enjoy seasonal dishes and menus inspired by recipes that Monet himself might have enjoyed, allowing you to savor your meal alongside the beautiful garden scenery.
While you can enjoy different landscapes throughout the year, the garden is particularly photogenic during seasons when the flowers are in full bloom. The opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). We recommend strolling through the garden during the soft light of the morning or the gentle light of the afternoon. Please note that from May to October, water lily maintenance is performed on Tuesdays, which may change the appearance of the water surfaces.
Beyond strolling through the garden, spending time at the cafe "Monet no Ie" is a must-do experience. The cafe offers seasonal dishes using local ingredients, seasonal desserts, and even craft beer or sparkling beverages. The site also features a gallery, a shop, and a workshop where you can touch upon the essence of an art-integrated lifestyle.
Near Kitagawa Village, you can visit historical sites such as the Nakaoka Shintaro Museum to learn about local history. While the area is a drive or bus ride from major cities like Kochi City, its rich natural environment makes it an excellent destination for driving or touring enthusiasts.
Since the garden is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via credit card or various mobile/QR code payment methods. For cafe or shop usage, we recommend checking availability in advance. Please note that tickets are sold only on the day of your visit and cannot be purchased in advance online. For the best experience, please be mindful of the seasonal maintenance schedules.
