The Mojiko Retro Observatory is a premier observation facility located in the Mojiko Retro district of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. Standing at a height of 103 meters, it provides an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Kanmon Straits. Situated on the 31st floor of a high-rise residential building, the lack of surrounding tall structures ensures a seamless view of the vast sea and sky. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil scenery of the Kanmon Straits, the historic cityscape, and the distant sight of Ganryujima Island.
The observatory is part of a high-rise building completed in 1991. The Mojiko area has a rich history as a former international trading hub, and the surrounding district is preserved with many architectural gems from the Meiji and Taisho eras. From this elevated perspective, you can witness the unique coexistence of the historic, nostalgic landscape and the modern, high-rise development of contemporary Mojiko.
The greatest draw is the 103m high panoramic view of the Kanmon Straits. During the day, enjoy the striking contrast between the blue sea and sky; at dusk, witness a beautiful sunset; and at night, marvel at the mystical scenery where the lights of the city and the sea reflect off the water. Additionally, digital telescopes (available for a fee of 300 JPY) are installed inside, allowing you to observe distant islands and maritime activities with much greater clarity.
During the daytime, the view is exceptionally clear on sunny days, showcasing the deep blue ocean. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes romantic as the lights dim and the city lights begin to glow. Since the facility is open until 22:00, it is an excellent addition to an evening stroll after dinner. Regardless of the season, the view is most impressive on days with high visibility and clear weather.
At the observatory, you can experience a sense of openness and tranquility while observing the natural changes of light and scenery. Using the digital telescope allows for a more detailed look at the distant horizon. The space is also an excellent location for photography, using the expansive landscape as a backdrop for your shots.
The Mojiko Retro district at the foot of the building is home to numerous historical buildings and dining establishments. It is easily accessible on foot from JR Mojiko Station. A popular itinerary involves exploring the charming retro streets and historical sites, such as the Former Mojiko Mitsui Club or the Fumiko Hayashi Memorial Room, before ascending to the observatory for a final view.
The interior is climate-controlled, though you may feel temperature changes near the windows depending on the season. Payments can be made via cash or credit card. If you wish to use the digital telescope, an additional 300 JPY is required. While English signage availability may vary, the facility is a calm environment intended for quiet appreciation. No reservations are required; you can enter directly on the day of your visit. The facility is equipped with elevators for easy access.
