Overview & Charm

Mogami River Teibo Senbonzakura is a historic and scenic cherry blossom destination located along the Mogami River in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture. The riverbanks are adorned with rows of Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, creating a soft pink landscape that flows alongside the river. The left bank (city side) features historic trees planted during the Taisho era, while the right bank also boasts beautiful cherry tree plantations. The harmony between the gentle river current and the blooming blossoms creates a serene and picturesque atmosphere.

History & Cultural Background

The cherry trees here carry a rich history tied to different eras. The trees on the left bank (city side) were planted in 1915 (the 4th year of the Taisho era) to commemorate the enthronement of Emperor Taisho, spanning approximately 2 km with 300 trees. The trees on the right bank were planted later in 1938 (Showa 13). Many of these trees have now exceeded 100 years in age, preserved as a cherished part of the local-cultural heritage.
